Amazon is reportedly in talks with the US largest mall operator to convert empty department stores into distribution centers.

Mall landlords typically prioritize finding tenants that will bring in new customers and attempt to drive foot traffic to the mall. While Amazon fulfillment centers would only draw their own employees.

Therefore, even through the impact on the overall mall is uncertain,smaller mall retail units may not do well if the foot traffic and the store sales continue to fall with no destination anchor bringing in customers.
